Get to know LION's MANE mushroom and what makes it special

LION’S MANE (Hericium erinaceus) is one of the most unusual-looking functional mushrooms. With its distinctive “hairstyle” and the amount of scientific attention it has attracted, it could almost compete for the title of the Einstein of the mushroom world.

Despite its slightly wild, almost hippie-like appearance, Lion’s Mane has been studied increasingly in recent years because of the bioactive compounds it contains and their possible interaction with the nervous system.

Researchers are particularly interested in compounds found in Lion’s Mane such as hericenones and erinacines. Laboratory and clinical studies are exploring how these compounds may be linked to nerve growth factor (NGF), nerve cell processes, and different aspects of cognitive function.

For this reason, Lion’s Mane research often looks at areas such as memory, attention, information processing, and other cognitive processes. Some small clinical studies have produced interesting results, but there is still not enough evidence to say that Lion’s Mane reliably improves these functions in every person.

Unfortunately, you are very unlikely to encounter this beautiful mushroom in Lithuanian forests. If it does appear, it is an extremely rare visitor. A related species found in Lithuania, the coral tooth fungus, is slightly more common, although still very rare.

The good news is that Lion’s Mane grows well under cultivated conditions. Fruiting bodies grown by responsible producers can be used to make mushroom supplements or simply enjoyed as food. Lion’s Mane is also an edible mushroom, valued for its unusual texture and flavor.

So Lion’s Mane is interesting not only as a functional mushroom. It is also an edible, visually striking species whose biological properties are still being actively studied.
